#10 – Lynnhurst – Minneapolis, MN
You’ve probably seen stories on the smartest states or cities in America. For instance, Massachusetts has more 4-year degree holders (38.7%) than any state in the union, while Mississippi (19.7%) has the fewest. For cities, it all depends on your population cut-off point. Do you count that tiny Wyoming town with three nuclear physicists and two doctors? If you just focus on cities with over 100k people, you’ll find that Michigan’s Ann Arbor (70.3% hold a bachelor’s degree) and Flint (11.4%) provide a fairly reliable upper and lower bound.

States and cities are interesting enough, but we were curious: what about neighborhoods? We spent weeks compiling Census data from across America to put together a database of over 140k neighborhoods. Next, we filtered out neighborhoods with under 5k residents. Of the remaining 6.3k candidates, we selected the 10 with the highest proportion of college graduates. Without further ado, here are the 10 best-educated neighborhoods in America:

  • Blazing Machine Gun

Since when does being a college graduate make you brainy? america is full of graduates living on moms couch that can even figure out how to pay off their student debt? How brainy is that?…And by the way.. The college grad cooking my fries is also not in the brainy category.

    • deadisdead

Making fun of student debt and troubles is about the class Id expect from somebody named “Blazing Machine Gun.” More hatred–how inventive.

      • Blazing Machine Gun

The only machine gun I have is in my pants. I thank you and your mother for noticing its awesome power. By the way it is impossible to make fun of someone. it is only possible for someone to allow themselves to be made fun of. It is called self esteem..live it love it learn it.

        • alitheturk

          Another genetic inferior jerkoff

          • Blazing Machine Gun

            Seig Heil?

          • gotnotruck

          Have a girlfriend? *wink

        • gotnotruck

YOUR SELF ESTEEM SEEMS TO LOCATED IN YOUR GENITAL AREA.

          • Blazing Machine Gun

            Works for me….And your mom.

        • Waggle ToOth

Those who don’t have sex, talk about it the most. You must undoubtedly be hung-like-a-squirrel

          • Blazing Machine Gun

LOL…Nice try…Why are you bringing up the subject by the way? Thunbs up.

        • stix282

You are a fool. Of course it is possible to make fun of someone, you for instance and regardless of your claim of it being impossible your insecurity is in your writing. ‘My only machine gun is in my pants!’ Immature and childish. How old are you and does your mommy know you are on line?

          • Blazing Machine Gun

No but your mommy does..My beer can is resting on that flat spot on top of her head right now…She would tell you her self but she has manners and does not talk with her mouth full.

          • Sarge

Mr. Gun is a walking abortion and the reason mothers eat their young.

          • Blazing Machine Gun

MMM baby ..my favorite…Can I get me some of that?

          • stix282

Pig! Grow up why. If my mom was living she would be appalled by the filth that spews from your big mouth.

          • Blazing Machine Gun

I think you would be more appalled at the filth I Spewed in her mouth LOL!

          • Edwin Svigals

BMG -youve gone too far – its time to retire from the conversation

          • Blazing Machine Gun

Yea well let this be a lesson for those with a lack of common sense….. If you don’t want raccoon’s or stray dogs hanging around your yard don’t feed them….If you don’t want trolls ranting at you don’t cross their bridge… and most importantly for those easily offended..Don’t mention a trolls mother unless you are willing to hear even worse stuff about yours… Have a good one Edwin

        • deadisdead

If you ever commit suicide, it will be the ultimate act of child abuse. You as a virtuoso pseudo-intellectual troll, are wrong about the impossibility of making fun of someone–its all in the other persons reactions? Making fun of someone is your intention, whether it succeeds is something else again. Only a silly control freak thinks they own the sum total of human exchange; but your way to dumb to know it

          • Blazing Machine Gun

I eat crayons…The blue ones are best.

          • Blazing Machine Gun

I eat crayons..Blue one are the best.

    • Adult_Content

I’d say a college grad cooking fries displays an awareness of the real world, there must be income to pay the bills.

      • gotnotruck

        GOOD FOR YOU.

    • gotnotruck

PERHAPS THEY STUDIED TO LEARN. WOULD YOU RATHER SPEND YOUR MONEY ON GAMBLING OR DRUGS? “BLAZING MACHINE GUN” DOENS’T SUGGEST A SMART GUY, BUT A VIOLENT ONE, WHO NEEDS TO PUT OTHERS DOWN TO MAKE HIMSELF FEEL STRONG.

      • Blazing Machine Gun

Naw..People cant be put down by others. They can only allow themselves to be put down.

  • lobstahlovah

Washington DC overall has 500k residents and 80%are poor, minority, lifetime welfare – it is still in the highest murder/drug worst places to live. Washington DC is also home to the Diplomatic corps so embassies from around the world are in these 4 neighborhoods listed. The 4 DC neighborhoods listed are very small and you listed percent of people rather than actual count of people. Also, most of the people who work here have homes elsewhere and are not residents of the city. If you listed cities, rather e than neighborhoods Washington DC would be among the WORST.

    • BethesdaDog

True…for any city that repeatedly elects Marion Barry. The D.C. schools are horrible. The rich white (and black) people won’t send their kids to public school. Culture has gone downhill ever since they cleaned up the section with the strip clubs. Used to have some of the best, now the morality police have taken over.

    • James Lee Leggett

Hardly, if it was 1985 you might be close to the truth, but otherwise dead ass wrong

  • sheri

Thanks to all the “brains” and educated people in and around Washington, DC our country is one of the most corrupt and bankrupt nations in the world. Please explain that….

    • Waggle ToOth

Yes…Higher education is always a bad thing.

      • gotnotruck

        YOU JOKE.

    • James Lee Leggett

They are all from out of town

    • gotnotruck

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE SMART TO BE CORRUPT. ALL YOU NEED IS A CALCULATOR. ALTHOUGH SARAH PALIN PROVED THERE ARE LIMITS.

      • Senatuspopulusqueromanus

Using all caps doesn’t make your statement any louder, idiot, actually makes you look like a retard. You obviously aren’t working with a full deck so people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

  • RealityBites

The person who wrote this article obviously has no college education or how to conduct proper research

  • Custom_Blinds

Ben Taylor (author) – you clearly declared your own absence from “the smartest” (whatever) in America when you screwed up the English grammar of your first sentence.

“…while Mississippi (19.7%) has the least.”

No, not “the least”, “the fewest”. When the elements of a group are individually countable (and 4-year degree holders surely are) then the correct words are “fewer” and “fewest” not “less” and “least”.

    • Ben Taylor

You’re absolutely right. Fixed. Looks like I should consider moving to one of these places because my current neighborhood clearly isn’t cutting it.

      • PandaCat

You’re the only one here not an anonymous figure behind a screen and keyboard- kudos to you for acknowledging mistakes. ;-) (And I’m sure your sense of humor allows the annyoying comments to just roll on by.)

      • Lembeck17

A perfectly humble and disarming response. Bravo! I tip my admiring ‘Grammar Nazi’ helmet to you.

    • gotnotruck

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I’LL BET YOU STILL USE ADVERBS. THE NEW YORK TIMES BEGINS SENTENCES: “MOST IMPORTANT, S/HE…”

      • Custom_Blinds

        what?

  • BMS87

The picture for Uptown Texas is actually the Uptown Theater in Chicago. I live near the theater and that is definitely it.

    • Ben Taylor

Yes: you’re right…the image got mixed up during publication. Thanks for flagging—it’s fixed.

  • blacksunshine84

College doesn’t make someone smart. It just makes them educated which isn’t saying much in these days of lowered standards.

    • Ordinary_Guy

Exactly. Author meant to say, “Most Educated…”

    • Turner42

I’d question the educated part also.

      • gotnotruck

DEPENDS ON WHERE AND WHAT YOU STUDIED, HOW INTERESTED YOU WERE, AND STILL ARE. EDUCATION IS A LIFE LONG JOURNEY. WHAT’S MORE FUN THAN LEARNING?

    • anonymous putz

You sure it isn’t edumacated? My teesher said it s okey dokey to misspell woyds.

  • alitheturk

Smart huh- who’s got 500 intelligent words -why they stay away from ‘division’ by zero?

  • alitheturk

if you were in the Navy they would drown you

    • Blazing Machine Gun

      KAAAAAAAHHHHNNN!

  • BethesdaDog

AU Park, yes, beautiful houses, sitting on top of buried and still dangerous World War I bombs from an unmapped disposal dump. Oh, maybe I have it wrong. It’s known for sure that the nearby Spring Valley neighborhood was probably home to a toxic waste dump harboring discarded mustard gas. AU was home to a chemical weapon laboratory during WW I.

    • Lembeck17

Shhh! Not so loud!! To most of DC’s recently arrived lotus-eaters, AU Park = The Elysian Fields. Still, I don’t want ‘BethesdaDog’ identified as some Bethesda realtor’s “enemy of the real estate.” Spring Valley… yes, how sad.

      • BethesdaDog

Funny….Actually, not so funny if someday, an explosive device buried 10 or 20 feet under a front yard or worse, a house, ignites. I don’t know how possible that is. Worse yet, while I was writing my comment, I did some googling, just to verify the history, and it was worse than what I remembered from the media. Not only were there explosives buried, but apparently AU had been home to that chemical weapons lab, and there might be mustard gas or something else under the surface. Look at how stupid people can be, especially the military officials who, after the war was over I guess, quickly shut everything down, covered up the ground, failed to map anything, and walked away. Everybody was happy just to move on, I suppose. Anonymous and unaccountable military and civilian officials. They’re gone, noboy knows who they were, they won’t pay for their negligence and lack of concern. Nobody thought it would later become a densely-built residential neighborhood. What’s even worse, those government officials who had to deal with it in the ’90′s, probably gave it a wrap by assuring the residents that all was good and there was no longer any risk. Even if I could afford that neighborhood, I would go nowhere near it. And I love Spring Valley and that area…I always stop by Wagshal’s Deli, there’s a Starbucks, some other nice stores. It’s a very nice, pleasant, upscale area. The AU Law Library is very hospitable–one of the few that makes its collection available to the general public, which is nice for a retired lawyer who might need to look something up. Center Pharmacy used to have a separate store which was a dedicated Veterinary Pharmacy. Really neat, good price for your dog’s prescriptions. Too bad it closed. As you can see, I really like the area.

I’ve probably made so many enemies for so many different reasons on so many different issues, who cares anymore? I just like to tell the truth….I always see the Emperor’s new clothes.

  • http://www.mazepath.com/uncleal/qz4.htm Uncle Al

Just for fun – and fear – what are the Asian and Jewish, Black and Hispanic population fractions in these powerfully overperfoming neighborhoods?

  • Banshee 722

You may find education, but you’ll also find tremendous conformity and lack of critical thinking in many of these neighborhoods. I lived in Cambridge and just visited Berkeley CA (land of Buddha–Jesus is So Uncool!), “healing refinery walks” and gourmet ice cream stores with rope lines. In many of these “educated,” “tolerant” places, you’d probably have your car torched if you had a Romney sticker on it. Which I hope to soon have (again) on mine.

    • TreyP

You’ll find just as many intolorant people in less educated neighborhoods. It’s just part of the human condition unfortunately.

    • Johanna

      You got that right, brother!

  • christopher mahoney

Obama says that every American should be able to live in every zip code. Let’s start by building low-income housing in these lily-white neighborhoods.

  • gotnotruck

SORRY FOR CAPS. ESPECIALLY DURING DAYLIGHT, OTHER LIGHT DRAINS THE GLOWING SCREEN. MY BROTHER AND I GREW UP WITH NO TELEVISION. NEVER MISSED IT. HOWDY DOODY WAS CREEPY. SKY KING, IDIOTIC. (THOUGH IT DID HAVE A SMART GIRL). I WAS DEVASTATED TO HEAR I WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO BE AN ASTRONAUT BECAUSE I WAS FEMALE. LATER, CORRECTED. WE ALL READ ALL THE TIME. MY MOTHER HAD WRITTEN FOR THE FEDERAL WRITER’S PROJECT AND ACTED FOR THE UNC PLAYMAKERS WHEN THEY TOURED THE COUNTRY. MY FATHER WAS A UNIVERSITY PROF, A HIGHLY GIFTED GEOMORPHOLOGIST WHO PREDICTED KATRINA, STORMS CONTINUALLY CHANGING ISLANDS ALL THE WAY DOWN THE EAST COAST OF THE US. HE THOUGHT NO ONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET INSURANCE BUILDING ON A COASTAL ISLAND. HE DISCOVERED THEIR CREATION BY RIVER SYSTEMS. LOATHED THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS, WHO HAD CREATED THE DEVASTATIONS IN NEW ORLEANS. WAS AGAINST DAMS IN GENRERAL. MY BROTHER JUST FINISHED A BOOK FOR MIT ON CHAOS AND COMPLEXITY IN URGAN SYSTEMS. WE’RE DESCENDANTS OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN AND MARIA MITCHELL, AN ASTRONOMER FROM NANTUCKET, THE FIRST WOMAN INDUCTED INTO THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES. THE PLANETARIUM AT VASSAR, WHERE SHE TAUGHT, IS NAMED FOR HER. A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, I ESCORTED TWO NAVAL ENGINEERS ACROSS CENTRAL PARK TO THE HAYDEN PLANETARIUM AT THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY. ON OUR WAY, I ASKED THEM “WHY ARE KIDS STUPID THESE DAYS, OR SEEM SO?” “COMPUTERS”, THEY STATED WITH CERTAINTY IN UNISON. I UNDERSTOOD WHEN I VISITED A FRIEND WITH TEENAGED CHILDREN. THEY SEEMED BRIGHT AND WELL SPOKEN. THEN I WATCHED THEM “DOING HOMEWORK”, EACH HAD AT LEAST FIVE SCREENS OPEN ON THEIR COMPUTERS, PLAYING TWO VIDEO GAMES WHILE STUDYING IS IMPOSSIBLE. NO ONE CAN MULTITASK, STUDIES SHOW. THOUGH STUDIES SHOW THIS AND LATER STUDIES SHOW THE OPPOSITE. READING BOOKS WAS MY LIFE. NOW I’M REDUCED TO TV DOCUMENTARIES AND AUDIO BOOKS. READ TO YOUR CHILDREN. MAKE VOCABULARY LISTS. MY BROTHER GOT A MERIT SCHOLARSHIP FOR ANY UNIVERSITY OR COLLEGE. (A COUSIN AND I GOT LETTERS OF COMMENDATION.) HE GOT INTO HARVARD, BUT WENT TO SWARTHMORE, AT AT TIME WHEN MORE STUDENTS WERE PUTTING THEIR HEADS ON RAILROAD TRACKS FOR GETTING A-s. THEY DECIDED THEY NEEDED TO LET IN LESS INTELLIGENT PEOPLE. WHY DON’T WE FEEL AS COMPETITIVE AS WE DID AFTER SPUTNIK. “EDUCATION IS WHAT YOU REMEMBER AFTER ALL YOU LEARNED.” LEARNING IS MOST IMPORTANT. STUDY LIBERAL ARTS. I FEEL SORRY FOR THE HORDES OF PEOPLE WHO INVESTED IN MBAS BEFORE THE BUST. STUDY SOMETHING WHICH REALLY INTERESTS YOU! ONE OF MY HAPPIEST MEMORIES WAS LYING IN A BARREL SLAT HAMMOCK MY FATHER HAD MADE, PICKING MUSCADINE GRAPES FROM OVER MY HEAD, AND READING “CRIME AND PUNISHMENT”. MY FIRST REAL ADULT BOOK AT TWELVE. A LIFE OF PLEASURE AHEAD. AS LONG AS I CAN READ OR LISTEN. I’D IMAGINE ANY COLLEGE TOWN WOULD HAVE A HIGH AVERAGE IQ. UNLESS IT’S A FUNDAMENTALIST CHRISTIAN COLLEGE LIKE PAT ROBERTSON’S.

    • Blazing Machine Gun

Wow…Errrr…You do know that there is something wrong with you right?

      • The Computer is your Master

schizophrenia. it affects the ability to control the complex processing in the human mind to stay on a single focused topic. so the schizophrenic communicates in a diffused rant. What is interesting is that he same diffused rant is going on in most people’s heads all the time, but they have an ability to block out the impertinent thoughts and appear as focused and coherent.

        • Blazing Machine Gun

          Thanks…

    • The Computer is your Master

schizophrenia tends to be more prevalent in males, so its interesting to see a women’s schizophrenic rant. good luck, hope you are well. not normal, i wouldn’t wish that on anyone, just well

  • Pancho Villa

These may not be the ‘smartest’ people (too much of higher education depends on swallowing what’s taught, hook, line and sinker) but they’re probably pretty safe to live around.

The crooks among them (note the Washington DC representation) don’t bother with small potatoes.

  • Bocheball

New Yorkers are the most intelligent Americans. Unfortunately, we’re infested by the least intelligent Americans who come to visit our great city. Just go to Times Square, any day or time and you can meet them, most with Southern accents.

    • The Computer is your Master

What I find in New York is that everyone there is a country rube from a small town, pretending to be “big city” people. Just millions of these, little girls mostly, in the “big city” but with the same dumb ideas. Its insane to claim New york as an intelligent place, its a crass place.

  • Swiss422

I love the picture of Lynnhurst in June. They may be educated, but man, isn’t living in a refrigerator a drag? I think if they were a tiny bit smarter, they’d relocate further south.

  • The Computer is your Master

Of course the idea of the “smartest neighborhood” is tremendously connotative, and is intended to engage your emotions. If they said the neighborhood with the most college grads, that would be just factual. and not engage your emotions.

  • Helfyre

uh not entirely accurate .I did not see my grandchildren’s zip codes. Sooooooooooo

  • FreudianSlip

All those “smart people” clustered around Washington DC just proves our entire educational system needs major changes to stop the progressive propaganda kool-aid which has failed our country.

  • Johanna

“College Graduate” and “intelligent” are not synonyms, despite all attempts in this article to make it appear so. Bill Gates got as far as his sophomore year, if memory serves. OF course he’s an anomaly, admittedly, but there are many millionaires in this country who have never graduated from college. Intelligence comes with the DNA and is unrelated to parental socio-economic status of a level sufficient to send a academically-mediocre child to a university where he rapidly convinces himself he is one of the superior human models. Other people who never attended a university: Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, the Wright Brothers, Thomas Edison, John D. Rockefeller… need I add to the list? I actually heard a couple of yuppies some years ago in Washington, DC talking about how college graduates were examples of “natural selection.” Presumably and hilariously, they meant natural selection for the optimum. Both wore eyeglasses, by the way, so clearly their DNA didn’t favor robust eyesight, nor obviously did it favor critical thinking. But they agreed that graduation somehow magically conferred biological superiority, so of course by implication they too were among those whom Nature had favored. The challenge facing any democratic country, on the other hand, is to identify and make use of ALL its human capital, regardless of their socio-economic status as children. This is what Thomas Jefferson favored– who by the way was yet another gentleman who left university well before graduation.

Just another story to keep the black man down. We’ve all seen the intelligence of Ferguson, MO residents and supporters over the last three weeks. Why is Ferguson not on this list? Whitey will never give us our due
